Get ready for more of the hotly anticipated Rockets Rewind. In this instalment we go behind the scenes from the early days of the u23 OCM series.
It was season 33 and a new series was underway. We needed a team of three youngsters to take on the other u23 trailblazers. A young Danish climber was already challenging the elites and was ready to spearhead the teams challenge. The other two riders that would form the first rockets u23 trio came in the form of Willard Sleeking and Rudolf Nieuwendijk.
The trio would bring some good results. Berthelsen took the win in Palopo - Palopo (U23)! The team attacked Rotorua - Whakarewarewa (U23) but came up short of a result, with Nieuwendijk finishing 33rd. Then in a bizarre turn of events, Nieuwendijk took the win in Tour of Hokkaido (U23) with Sleeking in 5th as they both claimed points in the International team World Tour points. That was the last taste of the series these riders would get as they moved up permanently to elites.
The U23 setup would remain dormant until season 44 when a trio of Fin Alroe, Joseph Mohan and Cedric Pursley would take aim at the series. Alroe impressed in the climbs winning Silverthorne - Mount Evans (U23). He then placed 11th in the U23 World Champs!
This season a new trio will aim to enter the series for the rockets and get us back into the top 10 in these manic races! Will Plantz has already mixed it up in the elites and is ready to be joined by two more climbers...sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
